Your Top 10 Ways to Stay In Shape Visiting Hanoi

Staying active while exploring Hanoi is easy and fun! Just as long as you don’t get hit by a scooter…it’s a busy city!

Sure, you can visit the X-Men Gym to lift weights, but that’s not your only option! From lakeside workouts to rooftop yoga, Hanoi offers unique ways to stay fit while enjoying the vibrant local culture.

Whether you prefer gym sessions or outdoor adventures, here are 10 great options to stay in shape during your visit to Hanoi.

1. Find a Gym

If you’re someone who likes the weightlifting routine in a gym while traveling, you’re in luck. Hanoi is a big city and offers several spots where you can work up a sweat, but I’ll tell you why X-Men Gym might be your best pick.

Whether you’re into strength training or need a place to sweat it out on the cardio machines, X-Men Gym is for every fitness level. Though, if you’re looking for CrossFit specifically, you’ll want to head to CrossFit Tay Ho.

Best budget gym near the Old Quarter is hands-down:
X-Men Gym: Day pass as of May 2025 is 50k VND (only about $2!!)
Address: 91 P. Phùng Hưng, Hàng Bồ, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam

Why is X-Men Gym the best gym in Hanoi for budget travelers? Be sure to check out my full blog post review on the X-Men Gym in Hanoi’s Old Quarters!

2. Exercise around Hoan Kiem Lake

As a central park of the Old Quarters, you’ll find that Hoan Kiem Lake is buzzing with locals stretching, jogging, and doing Tai Chi. It’s the perfect spot for a DIY outdoor workout.

Whether you’re doing bodyweight exercises like squats and lunges, or just soaking in the view, you’ll get the energy boost you need.

On a personal note, if you’re shy about exercising in public, I love how normalized outdoor fitness is at this lake. You’ll fit right in!

3. Join an Outdoor Dance Class

Speaking of the above, don’t be afraid to join in with the locals – they’re friendly and encouraging!

On my early morning strolls around Hoan Kiem Lake, I constantly saw group classes with different types of dance and Tai Chi. I even strutted my way through one of them as a part of my walk and received lots of smiles and high-fives.

This atmosphere is super friendly, and it’s a great way to experience the local culture while staying fit.

4. Rooftop Workout at Your Hostel

If your hostel has a rooftop (and many do in Hanoi), take advantage of the fresh air and stunning views.

Personally my travel yoga mat and resistance band are my essential travel workout gear. My deciding factor in a hostel might end up being their rooftop space for my personal workouts.

This hostel in Hanoi specifically showcases a yoga room in their accommodation listing.

If your accommodation isn’t the spot for your workout, you can either utilize nearby gyms, yoga studios, or outdoor spaces—they’re a perfect escape for both your body and mind.

THRIFTY TRAVEL TIP: Pack some minimal travel fitness equipment so you don’t need to use equipment at a gym

5. Utilize an Outdoor Exercise Station

Hanoi’s parks and lakeside areas are dotted with outdoor exercise stations, and I love how they’re not just free to use but also encourage everyone to stay active. (However, if you want guaranteed access to a full set of machines and equipment, X-Men Gym is your best bet—read more about how cheap it is in my full review.)

On one of my evening walks back from dinner, I noticed people of all ages using the equipment to stay fit and agile. These stations offer a variety of options for strength training, cardio, and stretching, making them a great way to squeeze in a workout while enjoying the fresh air.

You’ll find outdoor exercise equipment scattered across many parks and green spaces in Hanoi. Keep your eyes open as you explore the city, or use Google Maps to locate one nearby.

If you’re looking for a well-equipped spot, check out Vườn Hoa Vạn Xuân in the Ba Đình district—perfectly situated between the Old Quarter and West Lake (Hồ Tây).

Name of park: Vườn Hoa Vạn Xuân
Address: 2RRW+395, Quán Thánh, Ba Đình, Hà Nội, Vietnam

6. Go on a Walk

Walking is a great mode of transportation and it can help you slow down and find some cute cafes and cheap eats. The streets are cluttered with restaurants and coffee spots that are easy to miss unless you’re strolling by.

Hanoi’s lakes, like Hoan Kiem and West Lake, offer beautiful, peaceful paths perfect for a leisurely walk. It’s an easy, relaxing way to get some steps in while soaking up the local atmosphere and taking in the stunning surroundings. You can also head over to the famous Long Bien Bridge.

If navigating the city sidewalks and streets feels a bit like playing a game of “Frogger,” you’ll appreciate the peace and serenity (plus the wider sidewalks, free from scooters) by the lakes.

Whether you’re strolling in the morning mist or during sunset, walking around the lakes is a must-do for any traveler looking to stay active without breaking a sweat.

7. Find a Yoga Class in Hanoi

Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or a beginner, Hanoi offers a variety of yoga classes to suit your style.

With just a bit of online research, you’ll find plenty of posts about yoga studio classes and day passes available in the city.

8. Meditate by the Lake

If yoga isn’t your thing, try a meditation session by one of Hanoi’s beautiful lakes. Escape the scooter-filled streets and focus your gaze on the water. The calm surroundings make it the perfect place to unwind, refresh, or set intentions.

I once saw an older man sitting cross-legged with his shoes off by Hoan Kiem Lake, simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The Ngọc Sơn Temple at the center of the lake adds a touch of architectural beauty to the serene view.

You might even feel inspired to take a spontaneous few minutes to clear your mind.

9. Create a Running Route in Hanoi

Hanoi may have tricky sidewalks (or lack thereof), so you’ll have to intentionally tailor your running routes. Start your run around Hoan Kiem Lake early in the morning when it’s quieter. The loop is peaceful and scenic.

For a longer route, head to the Long Bien Bridge for a view of the Red River, or run the 17-kilometer loop around West Lake.

If you prefer something quieter, the French Quarter’s charming streets offer a less crowded experience. Stick to peaceful roads for a more relaxing run!

10. Rent a Bike and Explore

Biking is a fantastic way to stay active while exploring Hanoi. Many hostels and bike rental shops offer affordable daily rentals.

West Lake is a popular spot for cyclists, with its scenic 17-kilometer loop and peaceful vibe.

Just be mindful of the bustling traffic in busier areas and stick to quieter streets or lakeside paths for a safer and more enjoyable ride.

THRIFTY TRAVEL HACK: Pick a bike to rent and do your own cycling tour. It’s a great way to see more of the city than on foot.

Bonus Fit Tip: Plan your own Trek out of Hanoi

Craving nature? Trekking in Sa Pa, just a few hours from Hanoi, is the perfect escape. With breathtaking rice terraces, lush valleys, and local villages, Sa Pa offers trails for every skill level.

Pro Tip: Review itineraries on travel sites like Viator or GetYourGuide to see what’s possible, or research blog posts to navigate on your own. It’s easier than you think to travel to Sa Pa solo and find a local guide once you’re there or just trek to local villages on your own!

If you want a beautiful challenge and trekking adventure, you can do an overnight hike climbing Fansipan, the tallest peak in Indochina.
