EVER WONDERED WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE TO VISIT & SLEEP AT A 24-HOUR KOREAN SPA?

Fresh off a 10.5-hour flight from Bulgaria with a layover that left me completely drained, I needed serious recovery time. Having experienced Korean spas before, I was curious about one of the top 24/7 Korean spas in the US.

Perfect timing: I spotted a killer Groupon deal that made the decision easy ($35 day pass). I added on $20 for sleeping overnight which is less than the cost as a Chicago downtown hostel ($25-30), I could get 24-hour access to premium spa facilities.

My plan? Treat myself to proper jet lag recovery while getting work done on my laptop. Sometimes the best travel hack for staying fit on the road is knowing when to slow down and recharge properly.

What Is King Spa Chicago?

King Spa is Chicago’s premier Korean-style Jjim-Jil Bang Spa – a 24-hour wellness paradise that’s part spa, part hotel alternative. Located in Niles, this massive facility offers everything from therapeutic saunas to sleeping quarters.

Think of it as adult sleepaway camp meets luxury spa. You can literally spend an entire day (and night) here without leaving.

The Basics You Need to Know

King Spa Chicago operates 24/7, 365 days a year. The admission fee is $60 on their website. So, getting the Groupon deal is a steal!

The facility spans multiple floors with gender-separated spa areas and co-ed common spaces. No reservations needed—just show up and prepare to be amazed.

What Makes It Different from Regular Spas

This isn’t your typical day spa experience. King Spa Chicago combines traditional Korean wellness practices with modern amenities.

Paying for admission grants you entrance into the hot and cold pools, steam sauna, multiple hot saunas in the co-ed section, rooms with heated floors, plus specialty relaxation rooms (including one with extra oxygen!).

You also have the opportunity to book various scrubs, massages, and facials that will leave you feeling purified, zen, and brand new!

Here, you’re not just getting a massage and leaving. This is an immersive wellness experience where people actually sleep overnight in designated rest areas.

King Spa Chicago even has a movie theater! These recliners are great for sleeping.

Why I Decided to Go (And Stay Overnight)

I’d been to two Korean Spas before in New Jersey and reminded myself how awesome Groupon deals can be. I quickly found one for King Spa Chicago and figure it’d be fun to finally plan on an overnight experience. The logistical idea of coming straight from the airport and it being cheaper than a hostel night peaked my interest.

As someone who’s always looking for unique wellness experiences while traveling, I had to see what the overnight hype was about. Plus, my body desperately needed some serious recovery time.

The Curiosity Factor

Reddit threads were full of people asking the same questions I had: Can you really sleep there comfortably? Is it safe? What’s the vibe like overnight?

Time to find out for myself. I blocked out 24 hours for the full King Spa Chicago experience.

Money-Saving Hacks for King Spa Chicago

Let’s talk budget reality. King Spa Chicago isn’t cheap, but there are smart ways to maximize value and save money during your visit.

I discovered several budget hacks that can cut your costs significantly without sacrificing the experience.

Best Day Pass Deals

Groupon is your best friend 🎯 – I snagged my pass for $35 (saving almost half the price). Check regularly for deals throughout the year. If you want to add $20 for the overnight, remember that it’ll be cheaper than other stays in the downtown (which might cost $25+).

Frequent visitor tip: Look into spa packages for multiple admissions if you plan to return during the year. I did that in New Jersey and loved spending a full day working on my laptop sipping bubble tea and popping into saunas.

Food Budget Strategies

Game-changing hack: Eat at H-Mart next door 🛒 before entering King Spa Chicago. Late evening visits score you 50% off sushi – seriously unbeatable pricing.

Kitchen timing to know:

  • Kitchen opens at 10 or 11 AM depending on the day (plan accordingly!)
  • Late arrivals? You’ll be waiting until morning for food service

Pro tip: The lunch specials (11 AM – 3 PM) offer better value than dinner menu items. Same quality, lower prices.

Hidden Money-Saving Hacks

Face mask secret: H-Mart sells them for $1.29 vs $5.00 inside the spa 💸. Despite the “no outside products” sign, find a discreet spot (like during movie theater time) to use your own.

Drink strategy: Bring canned beverages and transfer to their cups from food court purchases. People drink throughout the facility, not just the food court area.

Top left corner shows HMart sign. Heidi is eating sushi at Hmart and then the right photo shows a large selection of face and foot masks. The Hmart is next the King Spa Chicago.
I first stopped at H-MART for dinner, snacks, and face masks (shhhh!)

Maximizing Your 24-Hour Window

Your day pass includes 24 hours of access before you’re charged another day of admission (though if you’re here after 2 AM, you get the $20 overnight charge added). Plan strategically to get maximum value—arrive early morning and stay until evening, or come late, stay overnight, and fill your 24 hours.

Overnight hack: Save money on accommodation by only spending $20 overnight here.

Overnight Sleeping Comfort Hacks

Sleeping on a basic mat on the ground sounds rough, but with the right strategy, you’ll actually sleep better than expected.

These comfort hacks transformed my overnight King Spa Chicago experience from “survivable” to genuinely restful.

Floor Sleeping Setup

Layer strategically. Use the provided mat as your base, then add the thin blanket they give you underneath your body for extra cushioning.

Position matters. Claim a spot away from the entrance doors and air vents. Corner spots offer more privacy and less foot traffic.

Pillow Solutions

Bring a compressible camping pillow—game changer for neck comfort. The provided pillows are basically decorative.

DIY pillow hack: Roll up your spare clothes in a pillowcase or towel. Works surprisingly well and saves packing space.

Curious about the full Korean spa experience?

Here’s exactly what to expect based on my overnight stay at King Spa Chicago—the pros, the cons, and the surprisingly relaxing.

Plus all the money-saving discoveries I made along the way.

Check-In Process & Layout

Check-in is super easy – they hold onto your ID and give you a wristband with locker key and barcode scanner for purchases and massage appointments. This wristband is like your key and wallet combined.

You’re separated by gender and then you head to your respective locker room.

The left image shows the lobby of King Spa Chicago. There is a front desk. The right photo shows after walking down the hallway to the women's locker room, a sign saying to remove shoes before getting to the reservation desk.

The Locker Room Facilities (Gender-Separated Areas)

The real curiosity happens in the gender-separated spa areas. This is where Korean spas can cause some potential discomfort for guests.

In the gendered locker rooms, you’re naked.

Yes, you can change clothes in the bathroom stall. However, in the shower and hot tub area, you’ll see everyone naked. Honestly, you just get used to it!

My very first time years ago, it was a little odd. But now it’s fun to embrace it as normal and freeing. You see all body types.

(TIP on TRANS/COMFORT)

Hot & Cold Therapy Pools

Multiple pools at different temperatures, from ice-cold plunge pools to steaming hot tubs. The contrast therapy here is incredible for muscle recovery.

I spent a solid hour cycling between hot and cold pools. My legs felt better than they had in weeks.

The Unique Sauna Experience

Two-floor layout: First floor houses main saunas, while the second floor is significantly quieter (meditation room, oxygen, and infrared rooms).

King Spa Chicago offers several patented and unique experiences you won’t find elsewhere:

The Overnight Sleeping Experience

Here’s what everyone really wants to know—can you actually get quality sleep at King Spa Chicago?

The answer is surprisingly yes, but with some caveats.

The Sleeping Areas

King Spa Chicago has multiple rest areas designed for overnight stays (typically on the 2nd floor). Though, when I asked the front desk, you can technically sleep anywhere including:

  • The main sleeping room on the 2nd floor is dimly lit with comfortable recliners
  • The infrared room is coed and women’s only. For the women’s only, you can lay on floor mats or recliners (which is what I picked since it had a small pillow)
  • The oxygen room has been rated well for quality sleep
  • The movie theater on the first floor has very comfortable recliners, but maintenance might wake you up for cleaning while sleeping

Around 11 PM in the main sleeping room on the 2nd floor, they bring out “blankets,” though they seemed like just an extra towel to me.

Pro tip: Bring your own small pillow. I only saw separate pillows in the women’s only section of the infrared room (below). Otherwise just built-in cushions.

Locker Space Reality Check

Shoes go in bottom of your locker (unlike other Korean spas with separate shoe storage). Coming straight from the airport with large purse, neck pillow, and backpack? Everything fit, but barely.

Airport travelers: Email ahead about suitcase storage – they’ll likely accommodate. Keep essentials accessible in your locker since space is tight.

Comfort Level & Safety

I felt completely safe throughout my overnight stay. Security is present, and the environment feels very family-friendly. I kept my phone in my locker for security, but also to better wind down for bed. Remember – you’re at a spa!

Sleep quality was better than expected. The temperature overall was comfortable, and the room stays quiet with enforced rules about noise and electronics.

Food & Dining Options

The restaurant serves authentic Korean food that’s actually quite good. I found the prices to be quite high in comparison to two other Korean Spas I visited in New Jersey. But that’s to be expected considering you’re dining inside a spa facility.

I had the noodles with chicken and a taro bubble that hit the spot after hours of sweating in saunas. Cash-free ordering using your wristband makes everything seamless (you pay when you check out).

The Vibe: What to Expect

King Spa Chicago attracts a diverse crowd—families, couples, solo visitors, and groups of friends. The atmosphere is relaxed and respectful.

Peak hours (evenings and weekends) can get crowded, but there’s enough space that it never feels overwhelming. Early mornings are blissfully quiet.

Pros & Cons of My King Spa Chicago Experience

Especially since I’ve been to some other Korean spas before, let’s get real about what worked and what didn’t during my overnight stay.

What I Loved ✅

  • Incredible value – especially with Groupon deals
  • Unique patented experiences you can’t find elsewhere
  • Exceptionally clean facilities and well-organized layout
  • Safe environment for solo travelers, including overnight
  • English-speaking staff – communication is never an issue
  • Multiple sleeping options for different comfort preferences
  • Trans-friendly and inclusive atmosphere with supportive signage

What Could Be Better ❌

  • Blankets are basically towels – challenging for tall people
  • Serious lack of outlets 🔌 – only one small wall desk with 4 chairs has power
  • No pockets in uniform shorts – would just be a nice touch
  • Face mask price markup – $5 vs $1.29 at H-Mart next door
  • No hot water option at water stations (other Korean spas offer this which can be great for tea bags)
  • Cypress block room sanitation – unclear how they clean those blocks

Essential Tips for First-Time Visitors

Here’s what you need to know before your first King Spa Chicago visit.

Korean Spa First-Timer Guide

Never been to a Korean spa? Here’s your step-by-step process:

  1. Check-in → Staff keeps your ID, you get wristband (here’s a mini guide)
  2. Locker room → Grab your uniform (pro tip: size up – if torn between M/L, grab L since shirts/shorts are paired)
  3. Shower first → Always required before hot tubs
  4. Enjoy gender-separated areas → Hot tubs, steam room
  5. Put on uniform → Head to co-ed sauna areas
  6. Relax, eat, repeat → Korean food, saunas, sleeping areas

What to Bring (Budget-Smart Edition)

King Spa provides: Towels, basic toiletries, uniforms, and thin blankets (after 11 PM).

Money-saving must-haves:

  • Eye mask and earplugs 😴 (absolute must for napping/sleeping – people snore, lights stay dim for safety)
  • Reusable water bottle 💧 (two refill stations + two fountains available)
  • H-Mart face masks 🎭 ($1.29 vs $5 – be discreet about using your own)
  • Phone charger 🔌 (very limited outlets – plan accordingly)
  • Sweatshirt if you get cold (be discreet or ask staff for extra blanket)

What NOT to Bring (Officially vs Reality)

Official rules: No outside food, beverages, pillows, blankets, or face masks.

Reality check: Easy to be discreet with small items when it thins out at night. 🤫 Just don’t be obvious about it.

Leave these at home:

  • Valuables (basic lockers only)
  • Outside food or drinks
  • Excessive clothing (you’ll wear provided uniforms)
  • Expectations of luxury hotel-style sleeping

Remote Work Reality Check

Laptop-friendly but limited. Only one small wall desk with outlets and about 4 chairs. Even main lounge and food court lack outlet options.

Perfect for digital detox but challenging for extended remote work sessions. Plan accordingly if you’re hoping to be productive.

Smart Timing Strategies

Maximize your 24 hour day pass! Arrive 6 PM → sleep overnight (+$20) → leave 5:50 PM next day = full experience at minimum cost.

Even if it gets busy at some point during the 24 hours, you’ll have guaranteed time when it clears out and you can have the place almost to yourself.

Timing Your Visit

Avoid: Weekend evenings & major holidays

Best times: Early mornings, weekdays, winter months

Is King Spa Chicago Worth It?

Bring a small pillow for extra comfort. Most visitors report sleeping better than expected, though it’s definitely different from a traditional bed.

Absolutely. Security is present throughout, and the environment feels very safe. I felt completely comfortable as a solo female visitor during my overnight stay.

The community vibe is respectful and family-friendly. Staff are helpful and the facility is well-monitored.

What’s included in the King Spa Chicago entrance fee?

Everything except food, the $20 overnight stay, and additional services. Your entrance fee covers access to all saunas, pools, sleeping areas, and common spaces for up to 24 hours.

Towels, basic toiletries, and spa uniforms are provided. Massage services and restaurant food cost extra but can be charged to your wristband. Plus, if you check out after 2 AM, you’ll get charged $20 overnight.

How long should I plan to stay at King Spa Chicago?

Minimum 4-6 hours to experience the main amenities. Most visitors stay 8-12 hours to feel like they got full value.

For the overnight experience, plan 15-20 hours total. This gives you time to enjoy everything without feeling rushed.

What should I expect during peak times?

Weekend evenings are the busiest times at King Spa Chicago. Expect more crowds in common areas and potentially wait times for popular saunas.

Weekday visits offer a much more peaceful experience. Early morning and late evening tend to be quieter regardless of the day.

Final Thoughts: My King Spa Chicago Experience

Here’s the Rundown: King Spa Chicago exceeded expectations for a unique wellness experience. The overnight stay was surprisingly comfortable and the therapeutic benefits were real.
