The Northern Lights (aurora borealis) is a classic! However, this means winter weather way up north and there’s no guarantee you’ll see them.

I highly recommend the guaranteed beauty of the Midnight Sun that occurs during the summer months in Norway. Tromsø is one of the top destinations to experience the unlimited daylight and golden hour glow.

Transportation from Tromsø Airport to City Center

The Tromso-Langnes Airport (TOS) is conveniently located about 6 kilometers (approximately 3.7 miles) from Tromsø’s city center, making transfers quick and straightforward.

Travel Tip: When you search, note that in the Norwegian language, “lufthavn” means “airport

Here are your main options:

Public Bus:

Svipper local buses 24, 40, and 42 offer regular services between the airport and city center.

  • Route 24: Travels via Tromsø city centre.
  • Route 40: Connects to Slettaelva.
  • Route 42: Heads towards Eidkjosen via the city centre.​

All 3 buses stop at the “Flyplassen” bus stop, located behind the airport’s parking garage (see photo of the bus stop sign below). (On Google maps it might just appear as Tromsø lufthavn).

You can purchase tickets at the Point Kiosk in the arrivals hall, at the ticket machine at the bus stop, or on the Svipper mobile app (using a credit card). You can also buy the tickets once you board the bus from the drive, but they accept cash only in NOK.

A single ticket costs NOK 50 for adults and NOK 25 for children and seniors. The journey takes approximately 15–20 minutes to the city

I would highly recommend going from the Tromsø airport to the downtown by taking this public bus. It’s very easy, cheap, and a short 15-20 minute scenic drive!

Common downtown bus stop (where you might get off the bus):

  • Sjøgata S3: Located near major hotels, it’s a central stop in the city centre.
  • Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum: Close to the Hurtigruten terminal, this stop is convenient for accessing various attractions.
  • Prostneset: The central bus station in Tromsø, serving as a hub for multiple routes.

Airport Express Bus (Flybuss):

This large red bus is the dedicated airport shuttle provides comfortable rides directly to major hotels and central locations. It’s synched with the arrival of the planes, so it’s pretty convenient with departure times.

There’s free Wi-Fi and charging ports and the drivers speak English well and will announce each stop en route.

Tickets are slightly more expensive than the public bus (one-way is about 120 NOK) but offer added convenience, especially if you’re carrying heavy luggage. Book your ticket in advance to reserve your seat.

Taxi to the City Center:

Readily available outside the terminal, taxis offer door-to-door service. You can try and flag one down, but it’s easier to download the app to coordinate the pickup.

Download the Taxifix App to secure your ride which typically costs between 200-300 NOK, depending on traffic and time of day.

Car Rentals:

For those planning to explore beyond Tromsø, several car rental agencies operate at the airport. However, please keep in mind the road conditions and the winter weather.

Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak seasons.

You’ll also need to confirm with your accommodation about where to park and how much it costs.
